A photo a day, keeps the ____noun____ away. Goal: Take at least one photo every day for a year and make a post about it (even if that post consists of one word).

Day 13

We all have those chores that we just hate to do. Ian and I happen to hate to do the same thing: dishes. I have gotten better over the past year and a half, if only minutely, but we still both hate it for one main reason; we don't have a dishwasher. Some of you may be thinking that we are underprivileged, and it's true, but apartments in Provo don't see a dishwasher as a necessity. However, avoiding the dishes can have amusing results. This morning I came out of the bedroom and saw this...

From A Photo a Day

Yes, you guessed it, this is Ian using a miniature butcher knife to make PB & J. Why you ask? Well, all the butter knives were dirty and he didn't want to wash one. Adorable.

Day 12

I had a bit of a self discovery the other day. I am like my dogs, or my dogs are like me...either way, we are similar. The dogs like to please me. Whether that means sitting when I ask, or not pulling on the leash, or whatever, the dogs like to please people. I like to please people. I work extra hard at work because I want my boss to be impressed with me; I listened (for the most part) to my parents instructions because I want(ed) them to be proud of me; I try to be supportive in the activities Ian wants to do because I want him to love me.

When my dogs do something bad, they sulk, put their tails between their legs, and give the puppy eyes. If I make a mistake that may cause someone else to be displeased, I feel disappointed with myself, like I have failed. Sometimes, I even throw a pity party.

When the dogs aren't getting attention, they jump up and make noise, anything to get you to give them attention. If I think someone is being more pleasing/successful/impressive than I am, I try to come up with some brilliant idea that makes me the center of attention.

Therefore, I am like dogs.

Day 11

I call today's picture art, a moment caught in time.

From A Photo a Day

What is it? you may ask. Well, what if I told you the title was "Reflections". Can you see the ripples of the water? Can you imagine the thoughts that ripple through your mind in purple in green? I have a secret for you: this picture is not entitled "Reflections".

Could it be entitled "Identity". Is there enough to say that the lines represent the compartments society tries to put us, the individual, in. The purple represents the true blend between the lines, how all humanity flows together. But yet again, this photo is not entitled "Identity".

In fact, this photo doesn't have a name. It is simply a paused version of the Windows Media Player light patterns that occur when music is playing on your computer. In reality, this image comes from the realm of the mundane, but when viewed through the lens of art, art can give meaning to anything.

Day 10

I don't know what is it about the night, but there is just some creepy quality about it. I am not sure how or why, but in night photos this crazy blur occurs creating flecks of light that the naked eye can't see. Night photography is in some senses very trippy, and can make every city look sinister, even Provo.

Day 9

Tomorrow "Spring Term" for school starts. I have all new classes, all new times, and all new teachers. I may or may not have achieved all my goals for the Winter Semester, but that doesn't matter anymore, I am starting over. It is a little bit like I am a blank canvas on which to paint my new scholastic successes and failures.

From A Photo a Day

Today's photo is of an actual blanket canvas, well kinda. This is a picture of the main gallery in the fine arts building. The gallery is in between exhibits, just like I am in between school terms. When I go into work tomorrow I am sure there will be art hanging up in the gallery, but as for now, the gallery and I are both blank, just waiting for tomorrow and the new show to begin.

Day 8

I figure Sunday is a good day to contemplate creation, so that is today's topic. Sometimes I just look out into the expanse and wonder where the idea to create such beautiful things came from. Like what sparked the idea to have really tall grasses in the water...

or clouds that float like big balls of cotton...

or make giant animals with hooves and horns that are happy herbivores...

or mountains that stretch to heavens, or a sweet sea breeze perfect for flying a kite.

I don't know where He got the idea, but I am sure glad I got the opportunity to be blessed by His creations.

Day 7

So I have been doing this for one week. I don't know how many people actually look at this, but hey, it's a good, healthy way to self-medicate, right? I can write whatever I want and I have no idea who, if anyone, reads it. At any rate, today's picture is of my dream house. Well, I should say my dream starter house. With my plans to have about 4 children, I think my family will eventually outgrow it.

From A Photo a Day

I pass this house everyday on my walk to school. Of course I love the tulips in front of the house, but I can just imagine little children climbing the tree in the front yard, or swinging on the swing. No matter what the weather is like outside, this little house always catches my eye. One day Ian and I will own a home, hopefully it will be as cute as this one. I want my children to have the picturesque childhood I imagine every time I see this house.

Day 6

Today's post is all about graphic images. I don't mean disturbing images, but photos that have a certain pattern or texture to them. For example, another name for a comic book is a "graphic novel". Some of the most interesting patterns can be found on some of the most mundane things. I hope you enjoy some of the fascinating details I found today at work.

Day 5

Now that I work in the Fine Arts building on campus, I've been thinking a lot about the question "What is art?" So today's topic is about art I don't understand. I could probably do a whole month's worth of pictures on this topic, but for now I will just stick with today's photos. Since I've worked at the H-FAC (stands for Harris Fine Arts Center), the craziest "art" exhibit I've seen was one with a long, white, ramp and at the top of it was a dead turkey. Everyday I had to pass that dead turkey for three weeks. It wasn't even taxidermied, it was just laying there, a big, dead turkey lump. Weird...

Anyways, so here's the first picture I took of "art".

From A Photo a Day

This morning on my way to work I saw this. Now I don't know what you think it looks like, but to me it looks like a giant mustache.
Now, look at what I saw when I was walking home from work...

From A Photo a Day

It's a flaming mustache!!! I just don't get it.

Here are some more masterpieces I saw.

From A Photo a Day

This one is called "Resurrection"; it looks like a mummy. I hope the second coming is slightly less creepy.

From A Photo a Day

I don't know what to say about this.

From A Photo a Day

This one was called "Maxine". I don't know who Maxine is, but if I were her I would be really ticked off that someone sculpted me like a big block.

From A Photo a Day

Again, I am speechless.

From A Photo a Day

Now this is a piece of art I was really drawn to. It's entitled "Steal Life of Forbidden Fruit", pretty clever huh? I think I mostly like it because the strong symmetrical/geometrical shape of the whole piece is so precise. If anyone has any interpretations you can provide, I am open to suggestions, but for now I will just chalk it up to "art".

Day 4

I call today's photo "Existence".

From A Photo a Day

This is a picture of where I will be spending my existence for approximately the next four months. Sure I will have a few classes here and there, and I will probably go home from time to time, but for the most part, I will be spending my life here. Don't worry though, I like my job.

Tuesday, April 20, 2010

Day 3

Today's topic: Tulips! Just stop and smell the tulips already! There has and always will be a special place in my heart for tulips. They come in so many varieties, colors, heights, etc. that it is insane. On my walk home (duration=20 minutes), I took 50 pictures of just tulips!

I think my love for tulips began as a child. My mom has a sort of a reputation for killing flowers (no offense mom), but I distinctly remember there being a certain batch of red tulips with yellow and black insides that would grow every spring by the front stairs to our house. I would get so excited when I would see the tulips start to pop up in the front yard, they were so beautiful. My mother would water those tulips, provide good top soil for them, and even talk to them sometimes (at least that's what it looked like from the dining room window). Since tulips were the only flower she could keep alive, I thought she was sort of a kindred spirit with them. It was enchanting how every year those tulips would grow and grow just for her. I have since learned that to kill a tulip is next to impossible, but I will never forget the pride my mom took in those tulips, and the joy it gave me to watch her succeed. Every time I see red tulips, I think of my mother.

Day 2

So here's my photo for the day...

I am sure some of you are wondering why I have a picture of the toilet as my photo of the day. Well, take a minute to notice the the details. If anybody out there figured out that the roll of toilet paper is empty, Kudos! You have discovered the real reason why I took this picture. This happens quite frequently in our household. Ian says that I use more toilet paper than anyone else in the world. I disagree, yet I do recall my father expressing some of the same sentiments. Maybe I should take this photo as a hint to use less toilet paper, but...somehow I doubt it.

Day 1

So today is Sunday-always a great day to take pictures. But today is a special Sunday. Yes, we went to our new church congregation today, but that's not what I am talking about. Finals are half way over, but that's not it either. Here, I'll give you a hint.

From A Photo a Day

Have you guessed it yet? That's right, Ian and I "tied the knot" 18 months ago today. Crazy, huh? Now I don't typically follow our anniversary on a month to month basis, but this month has been really crazy. Ian and I are both finishing up with school, we just moved, and we both are making some serious inroads in our jobs. Speaking of moving, I want to show you the monumental difference. So, out with the old...

From A Photo a Day

...and in with the new!

From A Photo a Day

Now don't get too excited, Ian and I didn't buy our first house or anything. Actually, we're not even renting the whole house. We live in the basement.

From A Photo a Day

That's our front door, and the little window at the bottom, that's the window to our kitchen. So even though we may not own the house, you can tell just by the fact that there are trees around that this neighborhood is a huge improvement from our last!

After 18 months of marriage, I can't believe how much has changed, and yet how much is still the same. I am still married to my best friend, though he is my best friend for different reasons than before. He still makes me laugh like crazy, but now it is because I know what he's thinking, and where his trains of thought will take him. I still find him to be incredibly attractive, but more so for what's on the inside than a purely physical attraction. So as I start this one year journey of taking at least one photo everyday, I have the comfort of knowing that Ian will always support me. He is the love of my life, and I will always love him for who he is...

From A Photo a Day

...even when he's playing video games in his 'jamas' in our couchless living room.
